Smart Login FAQ

Q1. What is Smart Login?

Smart Login is a Windows logon client for Samba. It provides an alternative method for computers to logon to a Smart-Net server.

Q2. What platforms does Smart Login run on?

Smart Login is designed to run on computers running Windows XP, Windows Vista, Windows 7, Windows 10 and later operating systems.

Q3. What are the advantages of using Smart Login?

  • Smart Login allows computers to logon to an SMB server without the requirement of having to join a domain.
  • Because roaming profiles are not used, the overheads and time to logon to a server are significantly reduced.
  • Smart Login works on all versions of Windows from Windows XP and newer, including Starter, Home editions.
  • Useful for technicians going from site to site, Smart Login can be configured for multiple servers.

Q4. I get the error message "User name or password incorrect..."

The server has rejected your attempt to logon because you may have incorrectly misspelled your username or password.

Q5. I get the error message "Invalid password..."

You have specified a username that does not exist. The server cannot validate the password for the non-existent user.

Q6. I get the error message "The credentials supplied conflict with an existing set of credentials"

This problem only appears to affect Windows XP and usually means your computer has already authenticated to the server using alternative credentials.
One of the following solutions may resolve this issue:

  • Solution 1: Ensure you're running Windows XP with Service Pack 3.
  • Solution 2: Clear any persistent drive mappings, then logout or restart your computer before using Smart Login again.
